Italy - Arbruzzo

Wednesday 25th May

Sulmona Piazza with Roman aquaduct

Sulmona

- is a bustling town close by, with real Roman ruins like the aquaduct, medieval buildings and Renaissance architecture. They also have a very famous Roman as a son of the city....the poet Ovid, who wrote the Art of Love in the first century BC.

Market days are pretty full on, in the Piazza. There are over 100 stalls.

Many trees made this an attractive area with streetside cafes, just the place for a fine lunch.

Ben walking on the Corso in Pescara
Pescara

- an Adriatic seaside town to the north east was a pleasant bus ride through the mountains.

Through the mountains to the coast, across the leg of Italy from Rome
The Corso in Pescara is a wide pedestrian thoroughfare leading to the Lido (beach). It is a shopping mecca for the province.

Liz on the Corso
The beach was entirely covered with tables and umbrellas, decks and cafes, all waiting for the Season to begin in eanest.

Tuesday 7th June

Scanno

Scanno

- is high up in the mountains. It is a popular ski resort  and now bathed in sunshine.

Ski lifts (look closely)

Ski lodges (easy to find)

Scanno is similar to Pacentro in its age and history but fully occupied with no empty houses, and with large hotels and chalets across the valley waiting for Winter.

Old town Piazza

We found a church with a permanent congregation...

.... and some useful, though rather unhappy, gargoyles.

Scanno has a lake nearby which adds to its attraction for locals to take a family holiday.

Mountain village from the bus

The road runs along the mountain lakes and the impossibly steep ravines, clinging to the slopes and diving into tunnels.

Steep ravines

Ancient villages perch on high ridges, ready to tumble into the valley, yet a testament to long and secure construction.

Auto strada

Then we were beside the auto-strata which sweeps through the mountains and valleys on via ducts......

.....reminiscent of the best Roman roads.

A good meal after a day out

It was always good to come back to Pacentro after a day out. Here is our favourite restaurant, specialising in 'slow food'
